Lack of Empathy

Empathy is the ability of an individual to understand another person, enabling an individual to look at a situation with another person’s perspective in mind. In an integrated society, empathy is a critical skill, as it allows people to become more forgiving, understanding, and accepting of others. Unfortunately, empathy is an emotional tool that those with Antisocial Personality Disorder almost universally lack. This causes several issues for the patient along with the other issues caused by the disorder. For instance, this lack of empathy curtails the ability of the patient to feel remorse for their actions. Empathy cannot be present without understanding; and if you do not sympathize with another person, there is nothing to stop you from causing harm.

This lack of empathy when combined with being egocentric and narcissistic tendencies, create a completely self-centered individual, believing that they are superior to everyone and unable to empathize with others. They are the perfect specimen to become tyrannical dictators or even serial killers. This is not to say that all individuals who have Antisocial Personality Disorder are serial killers, or are ‘evil’. This is absolutely, unequivocally, not the case. However, it cannot be denied that there is certain preponderance in these infamous populations for Antisocial Personality Disorder to be prevalent.
